Garden Step Lowering Works — Chessel Avenue
Project Overview
British Builders carried out external garden access improvement works at Birnbeck Cottage, Chessel Avenue. The existing concrete step and raised landing area were uneven, weather-worn and difficult to use safely, particularly where improved access was required for special needs tenants.
The works focused on lowering the step height, improving the transition into the garden area, and forming a stronger reinforced concrete section with a safer surface finish. The surrounding access route, existing fencing, concrete edges and loose debris were also considered during the preparation and making-good process.
Scope of Work
- Inspected the existing garden entrance, concrete step and raised landing area
- Carefully broke out and removed the affected concrete section
- Cleared loose blocks, rubble, leaves and debris from the working area
- Excavated the sub-base to achieve a lower and safer finished level
- Prepared and compacted an MOT Type 1 hardcore base
- Constructed a new reinforced concrete ramped step section
- Formed an even gradient to reduce the step height and improve accessibility
- Finished the concrete with a smooth float finish and light slip-resistant texture
- Trowelled edges neatly for safer use and a cleaner appearance
- Removed waste and rubble from site on completion
Challenges & Solutions
- The original step was raised and uneven — The level was reduced and reshaped to provide a gentler, safer transition.
- The area was exposed to wet weather, leaves and surface debris — The working zone was cleared and prepared before forming the new concrete section.
- The access route needed to remain practical for daily use — The new formation was designed with accessibility and safer footing in mind.
- The final level needed confirmation on site — The step height and gradient were checked before concrete placement.
Final Outcome
The garden step lowering works were completed to provide a safer and more accessible entrance to the rear garden area. The old concrete section was removed, the base was properly prepared, and a new reinforced concrete ramped step was formed with a neat, slip-resistant finish.
The completed works improved the usability of the garden access while keeping the repair proportionate to the existing external layout. All rubble and waste were removed from site, and the area was left clean, stable and ready for use.
