Marketing that is not wanted is not marketing, it is nuisance. This explains when we will contact you, what permission we rely on, and how to make it stop. Stopping it takes one click and we act on it immediately.
1. Our approach
- We ask before we email or text you, unless the soft opt-in in section 3 applies.
- We never buy marketing lists, and we never sell or rent yours.
- Every message says who it is from and how to stop it.
- An opt-out is acted on immediately, and permanently.
- We keep marketing separate from service messages, and never disguise one as the other.
We follow the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 and the UK GDPR. Where the two differ we apply whichever is stricter.
2. Marketing, and messages about your job
You can stop marketing at any time. Messages about work you have ordered, or about a membership you hold, continue while that job or membership does, because they are part of the service rather than an attempt to sell you something.
| Marketing, and you can stop it | A service message, and it continues |
|---|---|
| An offer on external decorating | A quotation you asked for |
| A newsletter about our work | Confirmation that a payment succeeded |
| An invitation to join a membership plan | A reminder that your renewal is due |
| A member-only discount | A reminder that your included annual check is due |
| Notice that a payment failed, or that we are changing our terms |
3. What permission we rely on
| Channel | What we need first | How to stop it |
|---|---|---|
| Your consent, or the soft opt-in below | Unsubscribe link in any message | |
| Text message | Your consent, or the soft opt-in below | Reply STOP |
| Telephone | That your number is not registered with the Telephone Preference Service, unless you told us we may call anyway | Say so on the call |
| Post | Nothing is required, but we honour any objection | Tell us |
| Your consent. We use it for conversations you start, not for marketing | Tell us, or block the number |
The soft opt-in. The Regulations let us email or text an existing customer about similar services without asking first, provided you were given a simple way to refuse when we took your details and in every message since. We rely on this and only within its limits: it never covers someone who has never dealt with us, never covers another company's services, and never survives your objection.
What consent means. A clear, positive action. A pre-ticked box is not consent, silence is not consent, and permission buried in terms and conditions is not consent. We ask separately, in plain words.
4. Stopping messages
| How | |
|---|---|
| Click unsubscribe in any message. It works immediately | |
| Text | Reply STOP |
| Any channel | Email enquiries@british-builders.co.uk, call 0330 912 7443, or tell any member of our team |
A request made by any route other than an unsubscribe link is actioned within 3 working days, and always within the 28 days the Regulations allow. You never have to give a reason.
Less rather than nothing. If you would rather hear from us occasionally than not at all, tell us. We can reduce the frequency or send only one kind of message.
Why we keep a note that you opted out. When you opt out we record that you did, and which address or number was involved. That record exists so we do not contact you again by mistake, and deleting it would defeat the purpose. You may still ask us to erase your other information.
5. What is in a message from us
- Who it is from, identified as British Builders, with a reply address a person reads.
- A subject line that describes the message honestly. No false urgency, no fake reply threads.
- A clear way to unsubscribe, in the message itself, not behind a sign-in.
- Any condition attached to an offer, stated with the offer rather than in small print elsewhere.
We never provide your details to another organisation for their own marketing, and we do not build behavioural profiles or make automated decisions about you.
6. If something goes wrong
If you receive a message you should not have, tell us at enquiries@british-builders.co.uk. We will stop it, find out how it happened, and tell you what we found.
You may also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at any time, whether or not you have come to us first.
