Cookies are how a website remembers things. This Policy explains which ones we set, what each is for, how long it lasts and how to change your mind. It sits alongside our Privacy Notice, which explains everything else we do with personal information.
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. When you come back, the browser hands it over, and that is how the site remembers your choices or that you are signed in.
Similar technologies do the same job by different means. Local storage keeps information in your browser rather than sending it back with each request; pixels and tags are tiny files whose loading tells a server that a page was opened. Where we say "cookies" in this Policy we mean all of these.
| Type | How long it lasts |
|---|---|
| Session cookie | Deleted when you close your browser. |
| Persistent cookie | Stays until it expires or you delete it. Each one below shows its lifetime. |
| First-party cookie | Set by british-builders.co.uk. |
| Third-party cookie | Set by another company whose content or service appears on our site. |
2. What this site sets today
This is the complete list. It was compiled by reading the site's own code rather than from a template, and it is short because the site does very little.
| Name | Set by | What it is for | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| wordpress_logged_in and related | british-builders.co.uk | Keep you signed in to My Account, and keep that session secure. Set only once you sign in | Session, or up to 14 days if you choose to stay signed in |
| wp-settings | british-builders.co.uk | Remember how a signed-in person has arranged the WordPress admin screens. Set only for accounts with access to those screens | Up to 1 year |
| Security tokens | british-builders.co.uk | Protect forms and account actions against cross-site request forgery | Session |
| bb_form_email | british-builders.co.uk | Remember the email address you last used on one of our forms, so the sign-in screen can offer it back instead of making you remember which address we hold. Readable only by our server, never by scripts, and cleared as soon as you sign in | 60 days |
Things kept in your browser rather than in a cookie
A few pages keep a small note in your browser's session storage: which billing period you were looking at, which plan you chose before going to checkout, and whether you have already been shown a sign-up prompt. It never leaves your browser, it is not sent to us with each page, and it is discarded the moment you close the tab.
3. What this site does not do
Cookie policies often describe a website nobody has looked at. So, plainly:
- There is no Google Analytics on this site, and no analytics of any other kind.
- There is no advertising, no remarketing and no conversion tracking.
- There are no social media buttons, embedded videos or embedded maps, so no third party sets a cookie through a page of ours.
- We do not sell or share anything about your visit with anybody.
Payment is the one place you leave us. When you subscribe you are taken to Stripe's own checkout page, hosted by Stripe, and any cookie set there is Stripe's and governed by Stripe's notice. We never load Stripe's scripts into our own pages, so nothing of theirs is set while you are on british-builders.co.uk.
4. Consent, and why there is no banner
Regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 requires consent before anything is stored on your device, unless the storage is strictly necessary for a service you asked for. Signing in, keeping a session secure and protecting a form against forgery are all strictly necessary, so those are exempt and there is nothing to ask you about.
One item on the list is not in that class. bb_form_email is a convenience: it remembers an address so a later screen can offer it back to you. It is set only when you have typed that address into one of our forms and sent it to us, it is never used to track you between sites, and it holds nothing you have not already given us. We think that is a fair reading of a form you chose to complete, but we would rather tell you it is there than bury it.
| If you would rather it were not set | What to do |
|---|---|
| Remove it now | Delete cookies for british-builders.co.uk in your browser. See section 5 |
| Stop it being set at all | Block cookies for this site, or use a private window. Everything except staying signed in still works |
| Have us delete it | Email us and we will confirm what to do; there is nothing on our side to delete, because the value lives only in your browser |
5. Managing cookies in your browser
Every browser lets you block or delete cookies. Doing so affects every site, not only ours, and blocking cookies for this one will stop you being able to sign in.
- Chrome: Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies.
- Safari: Settings, then Privacy.
- Firefox: Settings, then Privacy and Security.
- Edge: Settings, then Cookies and site permissions.
- On a phone, the same settings are in the browser app rather than the system settings.
Most browsers also offer a private or incognito window, which discards all cookies when you close it.
6. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
Browsers may send a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal. There is no settled UK standard for Do Not Track and we do not currently respond to it. Where a recognised opt-out signal is received we treat it as a refusal of optional cookies, and we would rather over-respect a signal than under-respect one.
7. Changes and contact
We review this Policy at least once a year and whenever the cookies on the site change. Every edition is dated and the current one is on our website.
