Mixed External Repairs — Garland Way, Westfield, Sheffield
Project Overview
British Builders carried out a set of mixed repair works at a residential property on Garland Way, Westfield, Sheffield. The work included replacement window glass, garden wall repairs, re-concreting and reinforcement of gate pillars, replacement wall plates, and rehanging the timber gate.
The existing gate and boundary area showed signs of wear, movement and deterioration, with loose fixings, aged timber sections, weakened pillar areas and visible cracking around the stonework. The window also required attention to restore a secure, weatherproof finish. Our team completed the works with a practical focus on safety, access, durability and a tidier external appearance.
Scope of Work
- Inspected the damaged window glass, external gate, garden wall, stone pillars and surrounding fixings.
- Removed the damaged window glass and prepared the frame for replacement glazing.
- Supplied and installed new glass to provide a secure and weatherproof finish.
- Checked the window operation, seal and final fit after installation.
- Removed loose and deteriorated material from the garden wall and pillar areas.
- Prepared the wall and pillar surfaces before repair and reinforcement works.
- Repaired affected areas of the garden wall using a suitable mortar mix.
- Smoothed and finished the repaired sections to blend with the existing wall as closely as practical.
- Re-concreted two weakened pillar areas to improve stability and support.
- Reinforced the pillar structure where required before finishing the repaired areas.
- Removed damaged or weakened wall plates from the gate support area.
- Installed new treated wall plates to provide improved fixing points and long-term support.
- Drilled and installed heavy-duty thunderbolts to strengthen the pillar and gate support system.
- Removed, adjusted and rehung the timber gate to improve alignment and movement.
- Checked and adjusted hinges, latch points and gate hardware where required.
- Tested the gate after rehanging to ensure stable movement and reliable closing.
- Cleared waste materials and left the external working area tidy.
Challenges & Solutions
- The gate had become difficult to operate due to movement and aged fixings — new support plates and reinforced fixing points were installed before rehanging.
- The stone pillars showed visible cracking and weakened areas — loose material was removed and the pillars were strengthened with concrete repairs and thunderbolt fixings.
- The timber gate and surrounding frame had weathering and alignment issues — the gate was adjusted, rehung and tested for smoother use.
- The window required a secure replacement rather than a temporary repair — new glass was installed and checked for proper sealing.
- The boundary area included mixed materials, including stonework, timber and metal hardware — each element was repaired using appropriate fixings and finishes.
Final Outcome
The damaged window glass was replaced, leaving the frame secure, sealed and weatherproof. The garden wall and pillar areas were repaired and reinforced, improving the strength and appearance of the boundary entrance.
The gate was rehung with improved support from new wall plates and heavy-duty thunderbolt fixings. Once adjusted, the gate opened and closed more reliably, with better alignment and improved stability.
The external area was left safer, tidier and more practical for everyday use, with the main access point restored to a more secure and serviceable condition.
