EICR Remedials — Sheffield

Project Overview

British Builders carried out electrical remedial works at a property on Thrush Street, Sheffield, following an EICR inspection that identified C1 and C2 safety issues. The works focused on replacing the existing consumer unit, upgrading protection across the installation, improving bonding and earthing, and correcting unsafe or outdated accessories and lighting points.

The photos show the consumer unit before and after replacement, upgraded bonding and earthing conductors around the meter area, labelled circuits, renewed switches and fittings, cellar wiring improvements, and smoke and light fittings installed across the property. Although this was completed as a maintenance job, the scope required careful coordination across several electrical areas to bring the installation to a safer and more compliant condition.

Scope of Work
  • Removed the existing consumer unit and prepared the area for replacement works.
  • Safely managed and disposed of asbestos-containing consumer unit materials where required.
  • Supplied and installed a new RCD board with SPD protection and individual RCBOs.
  • Upgraded meter tails and installed switch fuse protection where required due to cable run length.
  • Upgraded the main earthing conductor and main protective bonding to gas and water services.
  • Installed clear bonding and earthing labels at relevant points.
  • Added RCD / RCBO protection to required socket and lighting circuits, including bathroom and external circuits.
  • Replaced unsafe, corroded or damaged sockets, switches, accessories and metal faceplates.
  • Installed back boxes where missing and corrected CPC issues where required.
  • Repaired and replaced selected light fittings, including bathroom and heat-damaged fittings.
  • Improved cellar wiring by removing exposed connections and installing suitable junction boxes.
  • Installed smoke and heat alarms to improve fire safety coverage across the property.
  • Completed inspection, testing and certification following the remedial works.

Challenges & Solutions
  • The existing consumer unit required urgent replacement due to safety concerns — a new protected board with RCBOs and SPD was installed.
  • Bonding and earthing arrangements needed upgrading — new conductors and clear labelling were installed to improve compliance.
  • Several accessories and fittings were aged, damaged or unsuitable — unsafe items were replaced and corrected across multiple rooms.
  • Cellar wiring included exposed and poorly contained connections — these were made safer using suitable containment and junction boxes.

Final Outcome

The electrical installation was significantly improved through a structured programme of EICR remedial works. The consumer unit was replaced, key circuits were protected, bonding was upgraded, unsafe accessories were renewed, and lighting and smoke alarm works were completed across the property.

Following the works, the installation was inspected and tested, with certification issued to confirm the remedial works had been completed to the required safety standard. The property was left safer, better labelled and ready for continued use.
