Boundary Fence and Access Gate Installation — Whittier Road, Nottingham
Project Overview
British Builders attended a residential property on Whittier Road in Nottingham to complete external boundary improvement works, including the supply and installation of a new timber fence run and matching access gate.
The works were required to improve the security, privacy and overall appearance of the outside area running parallel to the house. The existing boundary arrangement was reviewed before installation, with attention given to the available space, ground conditions, fence alignment and practical access along the side of the property.
The approved works included the installation of approximately 4 metres of round-top timber picket fencing at a height of 4 feet, together with a matching 4 ft x 3 ft timber access gate. The installation was carried out as a complete boundary section rather than a small isolated repair, ensuring the new fence line looked consistent, secure and suitable for regular residential use.
The completed fence and gate provide a more defined outdoor boundary, improved access control and a cleaner finish to the side and rear external area of the property.
Scope of Work
- Initial assessment of the external boundary area and access route alongside the property
- Review of site measurements, ground levels and practical installation conditions
- Setting out of the new fence line parallel to the house

- Excavation of post holes to allow secure fixing of the new timber fence posts
- Installation of fence posts and securing them firmly into position
- Supply and installation of pressure-treated round-top timber picket fencing
- Installation of approximately 4 metres of timber boundary fencing at 4 ft height
- Alignment of the fence line to ensure a neat, straight and level finish
- Supply and installation of a matching 4 ft x 3 ft round-top timber access gate
- Installation of gate posts, hinges, latch and associated fixings
- Adjustment of the gate to ensure smooth opening, closing and secure fastening
- Final stability checks to confirm the fence and gate were secure and fit for purpose
- Removal of installation waste, packaging and loose debris from the work area
- Final clean-down and handover of the completed external area
Challenges & Solutions
- External boundary alignment — The fence needed to run neatly parallel to the house while maintaining practical access along the side pathway. The fence line was carefully set out before installation to achieve a straight and consistent finish.
- Working within a narrow side access area — The available working space was limited due to the house wall and existing external layout. The installation was completed in stages to maintain safe access and controlled working conditions.
- Ground preparation for secure posts — The ground conditions were checked before fixing the posts. Post positions were prepared carefully to ensure the fence remained stable and suitable for everyday use.
- Matching gate and fence finish — A matching round-top timber access gate was installed to keep the boundary section visually consistent and practical for regular access.
- Gate operation and security — The gate required accurate hanging and adjustment to ensure smooth movement and secure closing. Hinges, latch and fixings were checked and adjusted before completion.
- Improving the external presentation — The finished fence and gate helped make the outdoor area look more organised, private and properly maintained.
Final Outcome
The boundary fence and access gate installation was completed successfully. The new round-top timber picket fencing created a clear and secure boundary line running parallel to the house, improving the appearance and usability of the external space.
The matching timber access gate was fitted within the fence line and adjusted to open and close smoothly. The hinges, latch and fixings were checked to confirm the gate was secure and suitable for daily use.
The completed installation provided a more practical and presentable outdoor boundary, helping to improve privacy, access control and the overall condition of the side and rear external area.
All waste materials were removed from site, the work area was cleaned down, and the property was left tidy and safe on completion.
