Gutter and Downpipe Repair — Stamford

Project Overview

British Builders attended a property on Queen Street, Stamford, Lincolnshire, to complete roofline drainage repairs, gutter cleaning, downpipe works and lead flashing replacement. The existing rainwater system was affected by blocked guttering, moss build-up, poor alignment and defective flashing around the roof edge.

The photos show heavy moss and debris around the roof tiles, gutter channels and leadwork areas. Several sections required careful cleaning and adjustment to ensure rainwater was directed correctly into the gutter rather than running behind the system or onto the ground. The existing flashing was also undersized and ineffective, so it required replacement with correctly fitted material to improve weather protection.

Our engineer carried out a wider inspection of the roof edge, gutter line, downpipe connection and surrounding flashing before completing the approved repair works. The result was a cleaner, better aligned and more reliable drainage system.

Scope of Work
  • Attended site and inspected the guttering, downpipe, roof edge, flashing and visible drainage routes.
  • Checked the gutter alignment where water was not being directed correctly from the roof tiles into the gutter.
  • Removed moss, leaves, silt and debris from the affected gutter runs.
  • Cleared build-up from around the roof edge, valley-style areas and gutter channels.
  • Cleaned the gutters thoroughly to improve rainwater flow and reduce the risk of overflow.
  • Adjusted the guttering position by approximately 50mm to improve alignment with the roof tiles.
  • Checked gutter brackets and made adjustments where required to support the corrected gutter position.
  • Inspected the existing lead flashing and identified areas where it was too small and not providing sufficient protection.
  • Removed defective or ineffective sections of old lead flashing.
  • Supplied and installed correctly sized replacement flashing to improve waterproofing.
  • Secured and dressed the new flashing into position around the roof edge and adjoining surfaces.
  • Sealed the flashing edges to help prevent future water ingress.
  • Inspected the downpipe for blockage, damage and loose fixing points.
  • Cleared the blocked downpipe to restore proper drainage.
  • Replaced the broken section of downpipe with a suitable new section.
  • Clipped and secured the downpipe back into position for stability.
  • Checked the connection between the gutter outlet and downpipe to confirm correct flow.
  • Removed loose debris from the working area and left the roofline and guttering tidy.

Challenges & Solutions
  • The guttering was affected by moss, silt and organic build-up. Our engineer cleaned the gutter channels and surrounding roof edge areas to restore water flow.
  • The gutter line was not correctly aligned with the roof tiles. The guttering was adjusted outward by approximately 50mm so rainwater could discharge into the gutter more effectively.
  • The existing flashing was too small and ineffective. It was removed and replaced with correctly sized lead flashing to provide better waterproofing protection.
  • The downpipe was blocked and had a damaged section. The blockage was cleared, the broken section was replaced and the downpipe was clipped back securely.

Final Outcome

The gutter and downpipe repair works were completed successfully. The gutters were cleaned, adjusted and aligned with the roof tiles, helping water flow correctly into the drainage system. The defective lead flashing was replaced with correctly sized material, improving weather protection around the roof edge.

The blocked downpipe was cleared, the damaged section was replaced, and the pipework was secured back into position. The working area was left clean and tidy, with the rainwater system functioning properly on completion.
