Hot Water Cylinder Repair — Old Compton Street

Project Overview

British Builders attended a property on Old Compton Street to investigate a hot water cylinder fault after the tenant reported that the immersion-heated system was not operating correctly. The inspection included the hot water cylinder, immersion thermostats, local isolation switches, wiring connections, and the main consumer unit.

The engineer identified that the hot water cylinder was not receiving power correctly, with evidence of heat damage to electrical components. The works were therefore treated as a combined heating and electrical safety repair, rather than a simple cylinder reset, with damaged wiring, faulty switching and the burnt immersion thermostat addressed before the system was returned to service.

Scope of Work
  • Investigated the hot water cylinder and immersion heater fault
  • Checked the power supply from the consumer unit to the cylinder controls
  • Inspected local immersion switches, wiring and electrical connections
  • Identified heat damage to the immersion heater thermostat and related components
  • Replaced damaged electrical wiring within the main consumer unit
  • Renewed faulty switches serving the hot water cylinder
  • Replaced the burnt thermostat inside the immersion heater
  • Reconnected and tested the hot water cylinder supply
  • Carried out electrical testing across 16 circuits within the property
  • Issued certification confirming the tested circuits were in working condition

Challenges & Solutions
  • The cylinder had no reliable power supply — The engineer traced the issue back through the switches and consumer unit before carrying out repairs.
  • Heat damage was visible on the immersion heater thermostat — The damaged component was replaced to restore safe operation.
  • The fault affected both hot water performance and electrical safety — The works included electrical testing and certification after repair.
  • The property required a reliable handover to the tenant — The system was tested on site and confirmed as working before completion.

Final Outcome

The hot water cylinder was restored to working order, with the immersion heater now operating correctly and hot water available throughout the property. The damaged wiring, faulty switching and burnt thermostat were replaced, and the repaired system was tested for safe and reliable use.

A full electrical test was also completed across 16 circuits, with certification issued following the inspection. The tenant confirmed on site that the hot water and heating were operating as expected, and the working area was left safe and tidy.
